Now based in Ireland, Kylie has a unique advantage when it comes to sourcing and producing horses for the eventing world: first hand knowledge of the Irish horse, contacts within both sides, and first hand understanding of what works in the American market.
Kylie has been fortunate to have already had several top quality horses to produce in Ireland — some have been sourced as young unbroken prospects, many have transitioned from the show jumping arena to eventing with great success, with some of Donnacha’s owners coming on board for a new venture. Late in 2013 Silvia Hofstetter’s Sacramento topped the Goresbridge Go For Gold sales at €65K, a horse who up until the previous year had show jumped before transitioning to eventing. He will enjoy a fabulous life in the United States eventing with his amateur owner.
With the support of the Nichols’, we had a few top class young horses to work with beginning in 2012, two of which left early this summer for Ashley Adams to ride in the USA. The horses were purchased as unbroken three year olds by Geoff & Joanie in the September Goresbridge Sales. This was a new idea of Geoff’s, with the horses left in Ireland to be broken and to get a few miles under their belts before hopping on a plane to the USA. Buying three year olds has its perks in being able to buy the highest quality prospect at a substantially lower cost. In leaving the horses on Irish soil for a few months, owners have a chance to see what the horses are before adding the cost of export. Producing horses in Ireland costs significantly less than in the US, as the yards are cheaper to run, entry fees less, and many outings within close distance.
The Nichols’ system for three year olds offers a chance to select your own type of horse, for significantly less than one would have to spend if purchased as a finish product. It also allows the chance to follow along as an owner until the horse reaches whatever stage necessary to board a plane — whether a green broke four year old ready to go on, or a horse on its way to being a seasoned campaigner. Owners could follow along with video updates or trips back to Ireland to see the horses themselves, what better excuse for a holiday!
